Dr. Eduardo Viteri

Dr. Eduardo Viteri attended medical school at the Universidad Catolica de Guayaquil in Ecuador where he graduated top of his class and was an active member of the student council. He did his Ophthalmology residency at the Barraquer Institute in Bogotá, Colombia in 1982. At Barraquer his passion for teaching was so evident he was named resident monitor.

While doing his sub-specialization in refractive surgery at the same Institute he was one of the few specialists, along with Dr. Luis Antonio Ruiz, to perform frequently the Karatomileusis technique developed by Dr. Ignacio Barraquer in which a frozen corneal disc is carved with a special lathe. During this period he collaborated with Dr. Ruiz in the development of the In Situ Myopic Keratomileusis pioneering in the non frozen corneal ablation techniques.

After his residency he was named head of the Refractive Surgery department at the Maghraby Eye Hospital in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) where he spent the next two years introducing the In Situ KMM techniques to the middle east. He returned to Ecuador in 1989 to, along with his wife Dr. Lady Solórzano (Pediatric Ophthalmologist), join his mentor and father Dr. Juan Viteri (a pioneer of Ecuadorian Ophthalmology)  in his private practice. This new family team broadens the practice focused on anterior segment and refractive surgery.

Dr. Viteri culminates his formal education with an MBA from the Incae Business School from where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. In 1993 he becomes one of the first doctors in Latin America to perform LASIK. In 1994, along with his father and wife, he opens Centro Oftalmológico Humana Visión where his colleagues have also access to the technology. To date he is still Humana Vision’s medical director.

A passionate for technology, communication and education, since 2000 he organized with the local Ophthalmic Society several Phaco courses with live surgery being broadcasted on public television, live internet streaming and via satellite to Auditoriums in Latin America, all of them with the participation of renowned world surgeons. Dr. Viteri himself is a recognized authority in refractive surgery and Phacoemulsification and is often invited to give conferences, classes and live surgery for international congresses. In collaboration with SECSA, PAO and ICO he currently organizes e-learning activities.

Among the most notable appointments of Dr. Viteri are: President of SECSA (Ecuadorian Society of Cornea and Anterior Segment) where he still collaborates as Scientific Coordinator, Board member of ALACCSA-R, Ecuadorian representative for ISCRS, Honorary member of the Colombian and Dominican Republic Ophthalmic Societies, member of PAO´s E-learning Committee and coordinator of their webinar program. He is part of ICO´s Technology Committee, Medical Editor in Chief for the spanish edition of “Review of Ophthalmology” as well as member of the editorial committee for the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology magazine.
