Prof. Lansingh has worked in Latin America, North America, South East Asia, and the Pacific. He obtained his MD in 1987 from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico City, Mexico, with residency and postgraduate work in Mexico City (APEC/UNAM) and the Nielsen Center for Eye Surgery/University of South Florida. In 2005 he was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia in health sciences after field work with Aboriginal communities in Central Australia in which he studied the effects of the SAFE strategy for trachoma. After several posts in Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Latin America (a former Academic and Research Advisor of Fundacion Vision, Paraguay 2003-2007), as well as the IAPB’s VISION 2020 regional coordinator in Latin America from 2004 until January 2015. In 2012 he was named Voluntary Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami and one year later the Director of Outreach Activities of the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Tennessee. More recently he joined Help Me See as the chief medical officer for LA and with time seconded as Residency Training Director of the Mexican Institute of Ophthalmology (IMO) in Queretaro, Mexico
Prof. Lansingh is a member of the editorial committee of the VISION 2020 Latin America quarterly Newsletter since June 2005 and editor/writer of three of its sections. In addition, he has been the Chief Editor for the Spanish Edition of the Journal of Community Eye Health since September 2006 (available at: www.revistasaludocular.org), and a focal person of the AMRO (America North and South) WHO Region for the URE (uncorrected refractive errors) task force of the ICO (January 2008) as well as the Advocacy and the Diabetic Retinopathy Committee of the ICO. He is also an international Advisory Panel member of the Ophthalmic News & Education (O.N.E.™) Network from the AAO and ICO, and a member of the Group of Experts of WHO/PAHO since May 2006.
Prof. Lansingh is a member of various international professional organizations, including corresponding member in the Vision and Hearing Loss Expert Group, Non Communicable Diseases Cluster in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD Study), Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) Asociación de Investigación en Visión y Oftalmología (AIVO), International Society of Epidemiology and Geographic Ophthalmology (ISEGO), American Translators Association, Association for Vision and Research in Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Prof. Lansingh is a peer reviewer for: Eye, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, Oftalmología Clinica y Experimental, and the Australian Medical Journal amongst others. He has authored or coauthored 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 13 papers in non-peer-reviewed journals, 12 chapters in books, and several posters or oral presentations. He is a frequent lecturer in various international meetings/courses.
